Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S)
Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is a poisonous chemical compound. It can be found in water, oil and natural gas wells, sewer systems and other underground pipelines. It can also be found in hot and cold springs and volcanic eruptions as well.
It’s colorless and has the odor of rotten eggs in lower levels, in higher levels, you will never smell it. Most people can smell H2S from 0.47 parts per billion (ppb) up to around 100 parts per million (ppm). Anything from 100 ppm and higher will paralyze the olfactory nerve (being able to smell) and you will no longer be able to smell the rotten egg odor.
If you work in industries that might or will work with H2S, it is important to be trained annually or less depending on the work you are doing. You will also need to have proper personal protective equipment (ppe) and be trained on the ppe that you are using.
H2S is deadly and can be even after one breath depending on how any parts per million are on location.
